When it comes to breaking taboos, no one does it better than rock musicians. And I don’t believe anyone has ever breached this subject in a pop song: Tom Cridland’s single “I’ve Come Too Early” is more than a sweet and innocent ditty about arriving early for a date.

Cridland explains: “At the start of one’s sex life, all many guys are good for is a few thrusts. I even know a gentleman who was called out by his girlfriend for only lasting two!”

Cridland, the British fashion designer turned up and coming singer/songwriter is on a mission — to become the world’s greatest pop star — and he’s doing it by releasing a single a week, while he tours the United States with his band. The singles will be released indefinitely, corresponding to Cridland’s passion to create irresistible songs and share them with the world. So far he has written 130 songs, with about 30 recorded. As he travels, he is sending vocal tracks, recorded on a laptop, to his producer Andy Hughes, who is located in London.

Cridland’s latest single and video are masterpieces of double entendre, and feature a musical style that pays tribute to the great disco records that Cridland adores. In that video, Debs Marx, who is Cridland’s girlfriend and business partner, is seen posing provocatively in a hotel room, while in another scene at a supermarket, Cridland fills a shopping cart with hundreds of bananas. “I thought Debs said she needed 500 bananas for the banana pie, not 5!,” he explains.

As Cridland travels the U.S, he will play shows in all 48 contiguous states, while releasing a new single each Sunday morning. Accompanying videos are recorded on the fly as he travels with his band. And while Cridland may not see himself as an agent of social change, his openness about mental health and sexuality are refreshing features of his approach to promotion.

“I think people could talk more openly in general, whether about sex or money or the way they’re really feeling,” he says. “So much of our daily interactions with each other are inherently fake. That said, this song is just me having a bit of fun, and me and Debs having a laugh together in the video. We’re not inhibited, and we know that, across 100 plus music videos, there’s going to be a range of content from puerile to poignant!”

Charles Darwin’s theories may suggest that, in monkeys at least, natural selection favors those who are quick. In regards to premature ejaculation however, Cridland dismisses this assessment. He says: “In this context I believe the quick are not being particularly considerate to their partners. Though everyone’s tastes are personal.”

“I’ve Come Too Early” is available on all streaming platforms, along with Cridland’s weekly releases. Find out more about this fascinating artist at https://www.tomcridland.com/.
